Apr 2 - Two Horses Continues, with the source material

It's OK, you're NOT unsubscribed!!!
I made a huge mistake when I changed over your emails from Google Groups to this new mailing list server. It sent out a notice and it shouldn't have happened! I'm so sorry--so many of you wrote worried notes that you wouldn't be getting my blog. I can only say, after the fact, that perhaps it was an April Fool's Joke? But I'd never do anything like that to my friends out in cyberspace! We're still all together, now safely on the mailing list provider in my account.
Source Material for these paintings

Here's the source material for the paintings I'm doing. I doctored up the original--the foal was in a poorly designed position, so I Photoshopped her closer to her mom. And I moved mom to the right. Always leave MORE room in front of a horse than behind. Gives 'em some place to GO.

April 2 - Two Horses in Acrylics, Second Stages
Second Pass, Two Paintings, Different Background.  Here's where I cover the canvas, keeping in mind the design of the painting, but absolutely without any concern for any edges. I'm "massing in" the large areas of color, choosing those colors based upon the time of day (late morning) and also whether the area is nearby, or over 300 feet away. I change from warm to cool when I get into the distance.

The source material is nice, but nothing remarkable. Take a look to the left.

Workshop information is HERE.
Please forward this on to your friends, and thank you!

Mar 31 - Two for One! Horses in Acrylics

Ideas for Subjects?
I'm more than happy to take requests for subjects for paintings--it allows me to focus and perhaps to paint something I've not done before.

Other News

I think I mentioned that there was one more ewe ready to give birth? This morning I went out to see my flock is now up to NINE. This beautifully colored lamb was the big news--definitely a "coat of many colors" art lamb! I'd call this one Joseph, but he is not a he! So Josephina has joined the flock with her less colorful sister (hiding behind mom). That's three ewes = six lambs--four girls and two boys. Spring has been fun at Two Trees!
I've been spending time in the pen and pasture just watching the lambs play, and taking images for future paintings.
March 31 - Two Horses in Acrylics, Done in Stages
Two Paintings, Different Background.  I was sitting at the gallery for PAAR a few days ago, and with my acrylices wiled away the hours with these two paintings. The blue-green background is a 9 x 12, and the red-orange one is 12 x 16.

I started both of these from the same source material, a mare and foal in late morning light. With both of them, I drew with a wet brush into the not-dry underpainting.  The "cool" one is done with ultramarine blue and sap green, creating a neutral ground. The other one is cadmium red light, cadmium orange and yellow ochre, for a warm tone, but not as hot if I'd not used the ochre.

These two will be developed in the days to come, side by side, in stages. I hope you enjoy seeing them go to the finished stage!

The source material is nice, but nothing remarkable.

Mar 29 - La Vieja, the old Pug Painting

Horse Paintings Coming Up
I'm more than happy to take requests for subjects for paintings--it allows me to focus and perhaps to paint something I've not done before.

Other News

I've been spending available days working on two things outside of art--the big garden and the sheep pasture. That one is inside the other is not lost on me--weed control and planting! Here's an image of the fenced garden with mulch in place and the sheep doign weed patrol inside the perimeter fence. The mountain behind is wehre I hike. It's lovely green this time of year, and not much green in the garden yet, although I've planted about half of it.
March 29 - A Different Old One
Another one for the Canine Art Guild Online Show.  Called "La Vieja", this 14 year old pug belonged to the fellow who stayed in the guest house while he completed his masters. I now have her as the "third wheel" in the pack here, and decided that with her long life and gentle nature, she deserved a portrait. It came quickly, after I set her up on the cat perch (padded in the afternoon sunshine), and took her picture while she looked out the window.

I love old dogs. I should have more of them, because they are so grateful for what they have. She was sad for a day or two after I adopted her back, but quickly figured out her place and has been snoring mightily in happy dog dreams ever since.

This 7 x 5 oil is available for $100 from me.

Mar 27 - Doberman Painting for Canine Art Guild Online Show

It seems to be working...
I'm still tweaking as I learn more about the technology on this mailing list thingie. Bear with me!

The AAEA workshop is creating a lot of interest! You can go here for the flyer (pdf file, Adobe Reader required).

March 27 - Quick One for Canine Art League Online Show
During a part of the workshop when folks were working on their time-of-day paintings....  I started and finished this 12 x 9 oil of a Doberman Pinscher. This is actually a portrait of my long-gone soulmate Evoe. She was an elegant dobie, with lines of Shinya and Marienberg going right to Sun Hawk on top and bottom. Doing this backlit oil with the purples and blues complementing the oranges of her mask wa a joy. Do you see the Color System working? You veterans of the Color Boot Camps, I bet you can figure out the background!

I love painting animals who are gone--it brings them back to me and I can touch them yet again as the paint comes off my brushes. I think I have painted most every dog that has been a part of my life, and some still are here on the wall or in the rack.

I did an earlier portrait of her before the color system, and I share it with you as well in the sidebar. Same size, different color scheme. Which do YOU prefer? Email me...

I had a wonderful dinner this evening, with much of the vegetables coming from the garden: three lettuces (romaine, red oak and , beets, Swiss chard, carrots (cooked in mango sauce!) and avocados. That, plus the cod made for a fine meal.
And there's one ewe that is SO ready to pop. Huge as a house, I watched her graze today with one of the lambs kicking her side. What a wonderful spring!
